DALLAS COWBOYS HISTORY

DALLAS COWBOY/TOM LANDRY TRIBUTE PAGE

For as long as I can remember watching football I have been a Tom Landry fan. I was probably five or six when I got interested in Dallas Cowboy Football. The main thing that always impressed me and still does is his personal testimony for Christ and the way he wanted the people around him to know about his faith and trust in God. Even in the bad years of Dallas Cowboys football. In 29 years as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys he led them to five Super Bowls, winning twice. He had 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966 to 1985. In that span of time his Cowboys went 208-79-2 in the regular season with a .723 win percentage in the regular season. And he went 228-95-2 with a .705 win percentage counting the regular season and the playoffs. A feat that I don't think has been matched since. I don't know for sure. He was the man who a lot of other coaches learned from. The motion offense where the man goes in motion before the snap was his idea. But he is mostly remembered, as a coach at least, for his great defenses. Both as A defensive back for the New York Giants, then as defensive coordinator for a few years until he left New York to go to Dallas after the 1959 season. That is where he was contacted by the new ownership of the Dallas Cowboys.

Roger Bennett Tribute Page

Roger Bennett March 10,1959 - March 17, 2007

Roger Bennett was born in Strawberry, Arkansas on March 10, 1959. He played in a local group before joining the Cathedral Quartet in 1979 at the age of 20 years old. In fact it was at a local concert around where Roger was from that Steve Lee and Kirk Talley heard him at a concert (with several other artists) and the went and told Glen Payne & George Younce (who were both on the bus) that they just had to hear him to believe it. Later that night they hired him to take over the piano playing for Steve Lee which allowed Steve Lee to concentrate on just being the group’s baritone singer. Roger stayed with the Cathedral Quartet for almost 20 years. He left in the late ‘80’s for a short while to help get a record company started (Journey Records). In December of 1998 (I believe) George Younce and Glen Payne announced that the final tour of the Cathedral Quartet would end in December of 1999. So during that last year Roger Bennett and Scott Fowler started working on putting together their own quartet now known as Legacy Five. They started traveling together in January of 2000, just a few days after the final concert of the Cathedral Quartet. Roger traveled with them over the past couple of years whenever possible. But due to his health situation with leukemia he had to miss concerts every now and then because of chemo and the two or three attempted bone marrow/stem cell transplants. He finally knows the reality of the songs he sung about and co-wrote with his wife Debbie, “Jesus Saves”, and “I’ve Read the Back of the Book And We Win“. Be Praying for the Bennett Family and the Legacy Five Family during this time.

Anthony Burger Tribute Page

Anthony Burger

June 5, 1961 - Feb. 22,2006

Anthony Burger's story is amazing. At eight months old he fell onto a floor furnace while learning to walk using a walker. He had to be carried around for about a year I believe on pillows as well as 2 or 3 medicated baths every day for a good while. The doctors told his parents that he would never use his hands. The burns on his face, hands, and legs I believe, were third degree burns. Serious business. Anthony Burger started playing the piano at the age of three. And at the age of five he was accepted into a very prestegious(Cadek Music Conservatory at Chattanooga?) school of music in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the youngest ever at that time to be accepted there. On the night of his first recital(age 6) it did not go so well. As he put it, "It was the worst night of my life!". He joined the Kingsmen Quartet when he was just sixteen. He won the Singing News Fan Award for Favorite Pianist for ten years in a row. I believe that was 1980-1989. After that, I believe they asked him to retire from that contest and let the award be named after him so, as I heard it said, "so someone else can win the award in your life time". That's what I heard. Hehe! I saw him in person two or three times over the years. He was a nice guy. I really believe that he loved the Lord he played for and about. He then went on to play for The Gaither Vocal Band, The Gaither Trio, and the Gaither Homecoming concerts. He will definitely be missed. God, Bless and comfort his family and friends. Go toAnthony's website for more info on his life.

Kingsmen Quartet Page

Another one of my favorite quartets is the Kingsmen Quartet from around Asheville, North Carolina. They have been around since the mid to late forties but were known by a couple of other names up until about 1955, when I believe Eldridge Fox assumed managerial duties and named them the Kingsmen Quartet. They have had many years of successful ministry. The Kingsmen have had many singers and musicians pass through their group. Some of these are tenor singers Johnny Parrack, Ernie Phillips, and Gary Sheppard. Every long time Kingsmen fan knows who lead singer and master of ceremonies, Jim Hammill is. He was a great mc as far as keeping the crowd into the concert. And anyone who has any live recordings of the Kingsmen from the late seventies and early eighties knows the way he introduced certain members of the group. The Kingsmen have had a number of great baritone singers. Such as Eldridge Fox, Squire Parsons, Mark Trammell, Wayne Mainard, and Parker Jonathan. Some of their musicians have been Anthony Burger, Martin Cook, Greg Fox, Garry Dillard, Brandon Reese, and others. A few of the songs they did over the years were songs like Saints Will Rise, Excuses, More Excuses, The Judgement, Wish You Were Here, The Next Cloud, and many others too numerous to name here. A few years ago they went through a period of uncertainty as to what they would do after Eldridge Fox retired from the group and later passed away. For about three years they changed the name to the Carolina Boys Quartet. They just took the name Kingsmen back out of retirement a few years ago. They have been around in some form for over fifty years I believe. I hope you guys are around for another fifty years if the Lord tarries that long. The Kingsmen currently consist of Ray Reese - Bass singer/Manager, Brandon Reese - Drums, Bob Sellers - Lead, Randy Crawford - Baritone, Chris Jenkins - Tenor. Below are some of  the songs that they have made famous over the years.

A Place Where The Hungry Are Fed

Beautiful Home

Child, Child

Excuses

Glory Road

Go And Tell Somebody

He's All I Need

I Will Rise Up From My Grave

It Made News In Heaven

Jesus, I Love You

Just As The Sun Went Down

Leave Your Sorrows

Look For Me At Jesus'Feet

Love Lifted Me

Love Will Roll The Clouds Away

More Than Enough

Nobody Saved But Me

Shake Hands With A Poor Boy

The Cross Has Won Again

The Lovely Name Of Jesus

The Old Ship Of Zion

When God Ran

When Mama Prayed(Heaven Paid Attention)

Wish You Were Here

GOLD CITY QUARTET PAGE

Jonathan Andrews' Gold City Quartet Page

As most of my friends know, I am a huge Gold City Quartet fan. They are easily my favorite quartet traveling today.

They were started as the Mississippi Christianaires in Missippi. At the stroke of Midnight on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day 1980 in a town called Dahlonega, Georgia, the group Became The Gold City Quartet. Dahlonega was the place where one of the biggest gold rushes, outside of California, happened. I believe Dahlonega is an Indian name meaning Gold City. The original group consisted of Dallas Gilliland singing bass, Jerry Ritchie singing lead, Bob Oliver singing tenor, Ken Trussell singing baritone, and Larry Goddard on the piano. At some point Gold City transitioned from Dallas Gilliland to Harold McVay for a few months until Tim Riley could join the group. Later,Tim Riley also assumed duties as manager as well as bass singer. He moved them to his hometown of Gadsden, Alabama. They moved there in 1985.

Other notable singers to be in the group include, Ivan Parker who sang both baritone and lead at one time or other. Brian Free sang tenor for a number of years. Mark Trammell was the baritone for a number of other groups, most notably the Kingsmen Quartet, and Cathedral Quartet, and a trio called Greater Vision before joining Gold City a few years ago. He now has his own group called the Mark Trammell Trio. If you want to check his group out go to http://www.marktrammellministries.com. Before him there was Steve Lacey who also sang with the Kingdom Heirs, I believe, and now has a group of his own. Jeff Easter, of Jeff and Sheri Easter played the bass guitar with them for a while I believe. The current group consists of Tim Riley singing bass, his son Daniel singing baritone, Jonathan Wilburn singing lead, and Jay Parrack sings the tenor part. Channing Eleton is the piano player for Gold City, and a great one at that. Adam Borden is the bass guitar player for the guys. And I don't need to forget Doug Riley, another son of Tim Riley. He is the drummer for Gold City. He is the leader of Gold City's band. He has also written several songs recorded by Gold City.

The best thing about them is the testimony that they have. All of the men really seem to love the God they serve. They do appreciate the recognition they receive, they have been awarded many awards by fans and Christian magazines, but they say the number one priority of the group is to point others toward the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no doubt that God has blessed them in the rewards they have received here on earth because of their faithfulness to Him, and I strongly believe that they will have more rewards in heaven for the same reason.

Some of the songs they have sung over the years are, "Midnight Cry"," If God Be For Us"," Getting Ready To Leave This World"," There Rose A Lamb"," When I Get Carried Away"," I Can Tell You Now The Time", and many others. Too many to try to name them all. For one thing I don't know the names to all the songs they have sung over the years, and for another, I don't have enough room here to list them all even if I did. Ha! Ha! For more on Gold City, go to www.goldcityqt.com.

Thank you to Gold City for their help in giving me some of the biographical information for this web page.

I have a quick update on the group that I should have already done here. Tim Riley, bass singer and manager of Gold City feels it is time for him to cut back on singing because of some health issues and so they have added Bill Lawrence to sing bass. Tim Riley will still show up at a concert every now and then as I understand it.

Another bit of news I have neglected to update is that in June, Jay felt the Lord was leading him to come off the road and stay home with his family and also go back into church work, which he was doing when Gold City called him to be their tenor singer ten years ago. So pray for Jay and his family during this transition. The new tenor singer is Steve Ladd, formerly with the Anchormen. I have not heard him in person yet, But believe me, I plan to. Hehe! Welcome and God Bless, to Steve Ladd and Bill Lawrence. Well, Bill Lawrence decided to leave the road a few months ago and so since they needed a bass singer to fiil in for them until they found a permanent replacement, Daniel Riley the group's manager and baritone singer asked his dad to come back for a while and Tim graciously accepted. Also the new bass singer who will join Gold City in June I believe, is 25 year old Aaron McCune. So go see hime when you get the chance. I have heard him a couple of times and he has a great bass voice. He beats me, that is for sure. Hehe!

P.S. Keep praying for the Riley family in the loss of Tim & Barbara Riley's older son Doug in a car accident earlier this year(2006). The older brother of Danny. Danny also has a sister, Amy. And especially pray for Amy Jo and the boys,(Chapen & Griffin). Today(9-3-08) I got news that the "Band Of Gold" is back. At least on a part time basis. The "Band of Gold" now includes:Kevin Albertson - Drums, Taylor Barnes - Bass Guitar, Daniel Addison - Lead & Acoustic Guitar, Josh Simpson - Piano

The lineup for Gold City now consists of Tim Riley - Manager and Bass Singer, Daniel Riley - Baritone, Jerry Pelfrey - Lead, Robert Fulton - Tenor, & Bryan Elliott - Piano.

Cathedral Quartet Page

Jonathan Andrews' Cathedral Quartet Page

One of the groups I like to listen to is the Cathedral Quartet who were out of Stowe, Ohio. The Cathedral Quartet started(1963)as a trio consisting of Glen Payne(Lead), Bobby Clark(Tenor), and Danny Koker(Baritone). I believe Danny Koker also played piano for them. They added George Younce as bass singer in late 1964. Over the years they had several changes in the different positions. Men like tenors, Kirk Talley, Danny Funderburk, and Ernie Haase. Along with baritones like Mark Trammell and Scott Fowler. They have had several great piano players like Haskell Cooley,pianist/vocalist Roger Bennett, and pianist/vocalist Gerald Wolfe. Though the Cathedral Quartet name was retired in December 1999, the memories and legacy live on in tape/cd's/and videos, and in the ministries of several former members like Mark Trammell of the Mark Trammell Trio, Gerald Wolfe of Greater Vision, Roger Bennett and Scott Fowler of Legacy Five, and Danny Funderburk of Mercy's Way Quartet. And I almost forgot Ernie Haase and Signature Sound Quartet. Some of the songs that they sang over the years were songs like, Can He?, Could He?, Would He?, Did He?, This Ole House, God Himself A Lamb, We Shall See Jesus, Scars And Stripes,Oh What A Savior, Sin Will Take You Farther, and many more. The late Glen Payne went home to be with his Savior in October 1999. He is now realizing the reality of his song "WE SHALL SEE JESUS". George Younce joined Heaven's choir along with his friend, and brother in the Lord, Glen Payne, on April 11, 2005. Pray for his family and friends.
